What is Beta Testing?
Software is said to have reached the "beta"
testing stage when it operates with the bulk of its
designed functionality, and is ready for user feedback.
"Beta" software is still presently in development.
It typically gets released to select public users
to allow them to evaluate the product and its functionality
as well as help locate any problems not caught through
the rigorous alpha testing process. By catching any
problems during a “limited release,” they can be solved
prior to “GA” or the general availability of the application.
This type of testing enables the software to be tested
in real-world customer environments, giving users
the opportunity to evaluate the software, find errors,
and report them to the developer for correction before
a product is released. The developer records, tracks,
and addresses identified problems.
The primary goal of beta testing is to demonstrate
a high level of confidence that the software application
meets the acceptance criteria: function, performance,
usability, features, and capabilities.
Beta testing assesses the software and also tests
documentation, operator or user interfaces, and any
reporting functionality. Indirectly it also extends
the evaluation to the development team, technical
and project management, any application development
tools, and the software development rules and guidelines.
Essentially the beta testing process gives a developer
more than just feedback on the software.
