Certification
and Authentication of email using Digital
Certificates
Bitspan Digital Email Certification Service (DECS)
What is DECS?
DECS is a
simple, yet powerful service that can effectively protect your existing popular
email application from unsolicited and unauthorized emails thus creating the
optimal environment for electronic mail communication. By deploying DECS, one
can send and receive certified and authenticated emails with confidence. DECS
comes with a client interface, called "DECS Client", which works as a companion
to existing mail client applications, such as Microsoft Outlook or on popular SMTP servers.
The application communicates with the Bitspan's Certificate Authority to provide real-time email
address certification and authentication services. By deploying DECS, you can
enlist the resources of Bitspan to ensure authenticity of the email's origin as
well its content.
How DECS works?
When you send an email from
an email application such as Microsoft Outlook™, DECS Client attaches a small
certificate to the email's body. Upon arrival of the email at the receipient's
mailbox, the receipient's DECS Client checks the authenticity of the
certificate locally and then checks the sender's DECS Digital ID with the Bitspan
Certificate Authority (BCA). In keeping with Bitspan's strict privacy policy, this is done WITHOUT sending
the content of your email to Bitspan. If the email's certificate and the sender's
Bitspan Digital ID are valid, the email is considered authentic and is treated
accordingly. However, if the sender's certificate and/or digital ID is invalid,
for any reason, the email is marked as "non-certified" as treated according to
your instructions.
DECS Client, together with
Bitspan's Certification and Authentication Service, allows you to effectively
manage all certified and non-certified emails that are directed at you or your
company.
